WHO AM I?
Whenever anyone in our country is asked”Who are you?” what does he or she answers? ” I am a Gujarati” or “I am a Tamil” or “I am a Sikh” or “I am a Muslim”. But does anyone answers “I am an Indian”? No. This is because we do not know ourselves. This is because we don’t know our heritage. This is because we are ignorant of our history. This is because we are unaware of our past.
Has anyone known that what India has given to the mankind? Has anyone ever thought what our ancestors have left for us? Has anyone ever thought why a country which was once known as “Golden Bird” is now known as “Third World”? Has anyone ever thought why the country that once preached about unity has now fallen as a victim of division?
No one has thought about this because it is a human tendency to forget about his past and only look for his betterment. It is a human tendency to forget about his roots and only look forward for his upward progress.
If the roots are forgotten even a gigantic tree will shrivel, wither and finally die. Same applies to humankind. Forgetting his past will cause him troubles. Will cause regress instead of progress.
So before major damage is done to our image as an “INDIAN” let us remember our glorious past.
· It was India wherein first civilization was born.
· It was India who gave “zero” to the world and hence enabling counting as we know today.
· It was India who realized importance of a healthy body and hence gave “yoga” and “ayurved” to world
· It was India where epics where “Ramayana” ,”Mahabharata”, ”Vedas”, ”Upanishads” etc were written which explained various details on subjects of political science, science , physics, chemistry ,mathematics, general life, engineering, astronomy etc.
· It was India where rulers like Rama, Yudhishthira, Akbar, Rana Pratap, Shivaji, Ranjeetsingh etc were born who ruled not only the lands of their kingdom but also ruled the hearts of their citizens.
· It was India where Parsees were welcomed heartily after they were removed forcibly from their lands.
· It was India for which Vasco-da-Gama and Columbus set the sails of their ships and tried to find a new sea route.
· It is India where joint family is seen as mark of prosperity.
· It is India where people believed in cultural expansion rather than political expansion.
· It was India where a religion was born in order to protect people rather than in opposition to existing religion
These are few facts we should all remember. These are facts which make us proud to be “INDIAN”. These are the facts we should bear in mind as we give our introduction to other people as " I AM AN INDIAN."
